Avatar 3 Officially Titled: ‘Fire and Ash’

The title of the third Avatar film was revealed during Friday’s D23 Expo by director James Cameron, Zoe Salanda, a star in the film and Sam Worthington as “Avatar: Fire and Ash”.

While no footage was shared by Cameron, he did put forward some intriguing concept art that included scenes such as Neytiri who is played by Saldaña riding on a banshee, giant airships and our first look at powerful and mighty ash people of Na’vi. The mysterious figures are depicted swathed in ethereal soot with alien masks over their faces as they leap around an enormous bonfire.

“This movie will show Pandora like it never has been seen before,” said Cameron. “This film is an extraordinary visual spectacle, but it also has deep emotional stakes—higher than anything we’ve done before. We’re venturing into truly challenging territory for all the characters you’ve come to know and love,” he added.

“Fire and Ash” was filmed concurrently with 2022’s “Avatar: “The Way of Water”; this extended the story of humanity and the Na’vi battles after the intrusion of the Resources Development Administration (RDA) on Pandora. At the close of “The Way of Water,” Jake Sully (Worthington) and his family fend off an attack by RDA on Metkayina, the water-dwelling Na’vi relatives of their clan. But the triumph is costly; the couple’s elder kid is killed in action leaving the RDA strategically established on Pandora.

“Fire and Ash” will continue the story shortly after these events, as Jake and Neytiri are going to meet the Ash People – a Na’vi group which deserves to be described as quite more antagonistic than the other clans, in Cameron’s view.

“New characters are introduced and some of them I believe you are going to like or dislike,” Cameron said half-joking.

Oona Chaplin of “Game of Thrones” has been cast as the Queen of the Ash People known as Varang. Reprising their roles will be David Thewlis, and Michelle Yeoh, while Worthington, Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis, Britain Dalton, Jack Champion, Trinity Jo-Li Bliss, Bailey Bass, Joel David Moore, Edie Falco and Dileep Rao will also feature in the film.

These two scripts: “The Way of Water” and ” Fire and Ash where penned by Cameron, Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver. Originally planned to be a single movie which Cameron elaborated during some of his interviews, the director decided that there simply was too much material for one film during writing the script.

Cameron has directed all the “Avatar” movies with his usual collaborator, Jon Landau, the latter of whom succumbed to cancer at 63 in July this year. On the occasion of the death of Landau, Cameron in his statement expressed it like: “His legacy isn’t just the films he produced, but the personal example he set—indomitable, caring, inclusive, tireless, insightful, and utterly unique. From Michael Gondry to Woody Allen and Wim Wenders and everyone, he produced great films not by wielding power but by spreading warmth and the joy of making cinema. He inspired
